Your child’s dental habits when they’re young will impact the health of their teeth for the course of their entire life. So, it’s important to teach your child how to properly care for their smile at an early age.
How do I know my child is ready to learn how to brush?
Each child is different when developing motor skills, so when it comes to knowing when your child is ready to learn how to brush, you are the one who knows best. Many children are ready when they learn how to tie their shoes and most children are ready by the time they enter preschool. If you need help knowing if your child is ready, we invite you to ask our dental team for advice.
How do I teach my child how to brush?
It’s best if you first try teaching your child how to brush by using observation and partnership. Demonstrate the process on your own smile and make sure you show your child every important step. Share how long you need to brush, how soft you need to brush, and how much you need to brush. Then, give your child their own toothbrush with a pea-sized dab of toothpaste on it. Have them brush alongside of you and help them whenever necessary.
