If you’ve recently extracted your tooth, it’s time to properly recover. Having a successful healing process will help you improve your oral health and strengthen your smile. So, after your appointment with your dentist, Dr. Ben Vela & Alan Rodriguez, our Vela Dental Centers Kingsville team recommends doing the following things:

-Relieve the pain and discomfort you feel by taking the prescribed pain medication that your dentist gave you. It’s also recommended to ice outside the area for 10 minutes at a time. This will also help reduce swelling.

-Aid the healing process by biting down on a gauze pad. This will reduce bleeding and allow a blood clot to form. Make sure to change the pad before it becomes soaked with blood or after you’ve worn it for three to four hours.

-Rest for the first 24 hours and please limit activity for the next couple of days. As you lie down, prop your head up with pillows. This will help stop the bleeding.

-Avoid rinsing or spitting, using a straw, and smoking.

-Eat soft foods, like soup and ice cream, for the first 24 hours and gradually return to a normal, hard-food diet as the extraction site heals.

-Keep the area clean by brushing and flossing your teeth. It’s also recommended to brush your tongue. Whatever you do, please do not brush or floss the extraction site. This will help prevent infection.

If you use these recovery tips, you will be on the right track toward a strong and successful oral health.
